A washer made specifically for cold water faucets will expand in the heat and will cause future leaks if installed in a hot water valve. If in doubt, bring the old washer to a dealer who will help you determine the best choice for a new washer.
    * If you must frequently change the washer your washer seat may be damaged. To verify this, purchase a seat-dressing tool and follow the instructions on the manufacturing package. Place the seat-dressing tool in the faucet along with the packing nut. Rotate until the seat is smooth then blow out excess debris. This should solve the problem. If in doubt, however, consult a professional.
    * Replace the valve and turn the handle back into its proper position before tightening the nut.
    * Turn on the main water supply by turning on the valve under the sink then try out the tap. If the faucet continues to leak, it is fairly probable the washer you used wasn't the proper size. Repeat the steps and replace the washer with one the correct size.

Bath and shower washer–type faucets

Before attempting to change the washer of a bath or shower type faucet, remember to turn off the water first from the main supply. Since these main valves are often located inside the walls, check for an access door.

If your bathroom wall is not equipped with an access door, you may be forced to build one by punching a hole in the wall. You will want to install an access door over this hole so that you can perform future repairs. Remove the handle, escutcheon and packing nut, which may be buried in the wall requiring a socket wrench.

   1. Unscrew the showerhead. Use a wrench if needed.
   2. Remove the rubber gasket inside the shower head to inspect. If the gasket leaves black goo on your fingers, it needs to be replaced.
   3. Match the old ring to the new to select the right size.
   4. Place the ring into the shower head. It will take a small effort to push into place. Make sure the ring lays flat inside the head assembly.
   5. Wrap the Teflon tape around the pipe threads of the pipe (not the shower head). Wrap in the same directions the threads flow, and completely cover the threaded area without covering the smooth pipe. Use about two wraps of tape pulled fairly tight. You should be able to see the ridges of the threads but they shouldn't be cutting through the tape.
   6. Tear tape to separate from spool.
   7. Thread shower head into place, turning until the head is hand-tight.
   8. Test repair by turning the water on. If there is no leak from the seam, you are finished!
   9. If there is still a leak,unscrew head and re-screw.
10. Test.
11. If leak is almost gone, using the wrench, turn the shower 1/2 turn further. Do not overtighten, you risk stripping the threads.
12. Test.
13. If leak persists above an almost imperceptible "welling", start over, replacing the Teflon tape a little tighter, and with an extra wrap of tape. If the pipe is very old, the threads may be worn enough to require the extra tape.

Tips

    * If your shower head won't loosen easily, coat the joint with marine jelly, or white lithium grease and let it sit for an hour or more. Try not to force the head! You may strip the joint, crack the head, or (worst of all) crack the feeder pipe.
    * Another option if the shower head won't loosen is to replace the entire shower arm. Typically a new 6" shower arm can be purchased at your local home improvement store. Follow the instructions on the package to unscrew the old shower arm and then screw in the new shower arm. Be sure to use plumbers tape or pipe dope to the end screwed into the main pipe. Then attach the new shower head to the new arm. Be sure to check for leaks.
    * If you don't want to replace your shower head, look for a leak repair product. The quickest solution is light-activated resin, fixes leaks in 30 seconds.
    * Make sure to use true Teflon tape and not just any plumbers tape. True Teflon tape works much better and it is worth the little extra it cost.

Warnings

    * It is important not to overtighten the joint, as you risk stripping the threads and cracking the head assembly.
    * Start with no more than 2 wraps of tape. Using too much tape results in a bad fit and your first test may wash the ceiling!

Deputy In Videotaped Shooting To Face Felony Charges.

That January videotaped shooting of an Iraq war vet by a San Bernardino deputy Sheriff, Ivory J. Webb IV, 45 will become task for a jury to decide. Today the San Bernardino San Bernardino County District Attorney, Michael A. Ramos said today that Webb would be charged with Attempted Voluntary Manslaughter.

The videotaped shooting sparked a firestorm of controversy because Iraq war vet, Senior Airman Elio Carrion, 21 was shot three times by Webb. The grainy video seemed to show the unarmed Carrion complying with orders get up by the deputy who then fired the shots.

The confrontation happened after Carrion was a passenger in a Corvette involved in a high-speed police chase. Carrion, who is recovering from his wounds has not been implicated for any crime.

I look for this case to turn into a courtroom battle of the experts. Issues of the physical effects of a police pursuit on the officer and how the confusion during such a conflict may have negated evil intent are sure to be a large part of the defense.

There can be no doubt that police trainers everywhere will examine this case. Video cameras are everywhere quick to provide that instant replay to exonerate or implicate the players of such events.

Man being held for psychiatric evaluation to face felony charges

JEFFERSON - A man who held police at bay for four hours Sunday threatening suicide is currently being evaluated at a psychiatric facility in Augusta and will face charges of felony obstruction and public intoxication.
Sgt. Barry Gardner of the Jefferson Police Department said Monday that David Beck of 1968 U.S. Highway 128 (Business) will face charges after a few days of psychiatric evaluation.
Beck, whom authorities said was approximately 30 years old, was armed with a 12-gauge shotgun and threatened to shoot any police officers who came too close to him Sunday night.
Gardner said standard procedures for a person arrested with mental health issues is to have him or her evaluated for at least three days at a psychiatric facility. After three days, Beck will either be kept at the facility in Augusta or be transported to the Jackson County Correctional Facility, depending on psychiatric recommendations, Gardner said.
Beck had stationed himself in a wooded area behind the home he shared with his grandfather, about three miles south of Interstate 85 near the Jefferson Animal Hospital.
After the standoff, Beck was taken to B-J-C Medical Center in Commerce for psychiatric evaluations, and was later transferred to the psychiatric facility in Augusta.
Police were called to the scene by Beck's grandfather after a dispute had occurred. Jefferson Police Chief Darren Glenn said he did not know what the nature of the dispute was.
During the standoff, Beck fired the shotgun in the air a number of times, according to Glenn. Beck made no demands during the incident, Glenn added.
During the standoff, police routed traffic away from the area, and had been prepared to wait out the situation.
Beck's surrender came after lengthy negotiations with three members of the Jefferson Police Department's eight-member SWAT team, Glenn said.

Titans' 'Pacman' Jones to face felony charges

LAS VEGAS - Suspended NFL player Adam "Pacman" Jones will face two felony charges in a strip club melee that preceded a triple shooting in February, authorities said Wednesday.

Two other people police identify as part of the troubled Tennessee Titans cornerback's entourage also will face felony charges in the fracas inside the Minxx club, Las Vegas police said in a statement.

Since Jones was drafted by the Titans in April 2005, he has been involved in 11 separate police investigations, including efforts by Atlanta police to question him about a shooting early Monday after a fight at an Atlanta strip club. He has been arrested five times in a little more than two years. He has not been convicted of any crimes.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello did not say Wednesday if the Las Vegas charges would affect Jones' suspension for the upcoming NFL season.

Oil Filter Cross Reference Guide from Most Brands to AMSOIL. Oil Filter / Air Filter Cross Reference.

I'm trying to find what oil filters are available for my 3.2 powered 914/6 conversion with a one-off oil tank mounted in the original battery location.

The car was converted by the previous owner and he was not able to provide any additional information.

The car came with a Fram PH7325 oil filter that my local auto parts stores do not stock any more.

CM Filters (Canton Mesa) has a cross reference than indicates that their model 25-282 is interchangable with the Fram PH7325.

The CM specifications indicate that the 25-282 has a 20mm thread, 2 5/8" O-Ring and 4 1/4" length.

The CM 25-282 also fits 91-94 911 Turbo, 82-up 944 and 78-up 928.

Did you find a replacement filter of the FRAM PH7325?

My Stevens Machining /6 oil tank spec'd FRAM PH2977A oil filters(Subaru diesel), which I used from 1987 till now (~200K miles). I've used up the last of my PH2977A stash.

I found a Purolator filter that measures correctly, but I haven't used it yet. I don't have it here with me to rattle off the part number.
(edit; Purolator L34631. Fits perfectly, very highly rated in the 'oil filter study' thread.)

Did you find a replacement filter of the FRAM PH7325?

I just read the 'oil filter study'. Specifically, the FRAM part. The author did not buy/disect a FRAM diesel specific filter, but the FRAM diesel filters I had been buying(PH2977A) were comparable in price ($7) to the 'Fram Tough Guard' which the author seemed to like:

"This filter has an improved filter element with more surface area (248 sqin), a heavy silicone anti-drainback valve with a good sealing surface, the same plastic pressure relief valve but with an integral screen to keep out large particles, and enough inlet holes for good flow. In my opinion, the only real drawback to this filter is that it is capped on each end with cardboard instead of metal."

No direct evidence, but it looks like I have been using 'Fram Tough Guard' oil filters on the same /6 engine for the past 200K miles.

FRAM good/bad, mute point now as the FRAM PH2977A went out of production a few years ago. It has taken me until now to use up my stash. I'll be using the Purolator now.
